I have spent my recent weeks getting to know the rhythm of Lawrence. While the architecture and murals are what brought me here for photography, the food is what made me want to stay. Downtown Lawrence has a culinary energy that is unapologetically local and fiercely independent.
If you are planning a session with me in LFK or just spending a Saturday on Mass St., these are some of the best restaurants I recommend for a great meal and an authentically Lawrence atmosphere.

Ladybird Diner is more than just a place to grab lunch; it is a Lawrence institution. I had the pleasure of photographing the owner, Meg Heriford (aka Mama Med, or the Pie Lady), dining with her mother. Seeing that connection over a slice of pie perfectly captures why I love this city.

I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, which was a unique, delicious take on the classic. Whether you are there for the comfort food or a headshot-worthy interior, this spot is a must.

Ladybird Diner is open from 8am-3pm, Wednesday- Saturday. I highly recommend enjoying the friendly staff, cozy ambience, and delectable dishes the next time you are in Lawrence!

If you want flavor that jumps off the plate, Terrebonne is the spot. Kaia and I stopped in for lunch and were blown away by the authentic Cajun atmosphere. The storefront is charming, and the interior is packed with character.

Kaia and I visited Terrebonne’s the day before the local Mardi Gras celebration. I was so bummed we couldn’t be there for the festivities, but we still got a wonderfully authentic New Orleans experience and amazing food!

Latchkey Deli won me over immediately with its bright, airy atmosphere. It is overtly pro-human rights and inclusive, which creates a very safe and cozy vibe for everyone who walks in. It is a great place to sit, breathe, and enjoy a high-quality meal.

Latchkey Deli offers a cozy and comfortable atmosphere where you can feel the genuine love and dedication the owners have for their craft. The interior is thoughtfully decorated with local art and eclectic collectibles, creating a relaxed space that feels like a modern community hub. Whether you are enjoying the friendly, patient service inside or people-watching from the outdoor deck, the restaurant provides a welcoming, high-quality alternative to the typical sandwich shop. It is a place that prioritizes both the food and the people, making every guest feel like they are part of something authentically local.

I visited Zen Zero for a solo dinner and was met with some of the best hospitality in town. I asked the waitress for the most flavorful, popular dish on the menu. While she suggested the Pad Thai, I went with the Yellow Thai Coconut Curry. The sauce was incredible.

The highlight? When I mentioned how much my daughter would love the free shrimp chips, they packaged up a whole bag for me to take home for free. That kind of kindness is exactly what the “independent heartbeat” of a city looks like.

I don’t just scout locations for the light; I scout them for the experience. When you book a branding or family session with me in Lawrence, I want to make sure you know exactly where to go afterward to celebrate a successful shoot.
