I know the struggle of a Kansas winter. The grass is dormant, the trees are bare, and the landscape can feel a bit bland. However, as a photographer who documents the true colors of my clients, I have found that the winter is actually the best time to lean into urban textures. When the nature trails are muddy and gray, the city streets are still full of character and grit.
I have spent my recent weeks scouting the best corners of Lawrence and Kansas City to add to my established favorites in Manhattan. Whether you are a business owner needing a branding refresh, a high school senior wanting an editorial look, or a couple looking for a raw and real backdrop, these locations are ready for your story.
A Note for Families
While this guide highlights urban spots perfect for individual branding and portraits, these locations are also incredible for families who want to avoid the “typical park” look. If you have active kids who love to explore, the vibrant murals and city steps provide a much more engaging experience than a stagnant studio. You can check out my dedicated pages for Lawrence Family Photography and Kansas City Family Photography to see how I capture those real, unscripted connections in the heart of the city.
Lawrence (LFK) | Creative Grit
Lawrence has an artistic energy that does not stop just because it is cold. I love this city for the way it balances historic architecture with modern, vibrant murals.
Downtown Mass St: You cannot beat the classic brick and storefront variety here. I use the alleyways and doorways to find pockets of light that feel timeless and sophisticated.
The University Grounds: I head here for the stone architecture. The massive buildings provide a clean, high-end backdrop that feels intentional and editorial.
East Lawrence Murals: This is my top pick for a pop of color. The murals here are bold and resilient. They provide a massive canvas that looks incredible even under a flat winter sky.
Kansas City is where I go for drama. The scale of the architecture here allows us to create portraits that feel grand and established.
Union Station: This is the ultimate winter-proof location. The grand interior is heated and stunning, which is perfect for branding sessions when you want to look polished without shivering in the wind. Though, if the weather allows, the bridge behind the Union Station is a fantastic spot for some dramatic leading lines and shadows.
The Link (The Architectural Edge): The Link is a distinctive and unique indoor location where we can get creative branding or empowerment shots, or we can include the whole family. If we time things right, we might even catch a beautiful sunset!
The Crown Center and The Link: For a mix of grand scale and climate-controlled comfort, the Crown Center complex is a Kansas City essential. The Westin indoor waterfall is a masterpiece of interior architecture, offering a five-story wall of natural shale and cascading water that provides a lush, organic backdrop regardless of the weather outside. From there, you can move into The Link, the elevated glass walkway that connects the complex. Its geometric lines and floor-to-ceiling windows create a futuristic, high-contrast environment that is perfect for capturing silhouettes and leading lines. Whether you are documenting the exterior’s brutalist concrete textures or the soft, natural light of the glass corridors, this area provides an incredible variety of “urban adventure” shots within a single city block.
The Library District (The Creative Backdrop) The exterior of the Central Library is a statement piece. Using the ‘Community Bookshelf’ garage wall adds a massive pop of color and intellectual energy to a session. It’s a location that tells a story before we even click the shutter.”
The Crossroads Murals: These are larger than life. They offer a gritty, urban texture that is perfect for seniors or branding clients who want to stand out.
WWI Memorial (The “Iconic Skyline”): For that quintessential KC skyline shot, there is no better place. It’s also great ‘Golden Hour’ location where we can capture the city lights beginning to glow behind you.”
The Nelson Atkins Exterior: I love using the stone steps and the reflecting pool. Even in late February, the clean lines of the museum provide a sophisticated, fine-art vibe.
Manhattan (MHK) | The Vetted Classics
Manhattan is my home base. I know these streets better than any other. For a winter session that feels urban and real, I focus on the textures that never go dormant.
Downtown Poyntz: This area offers a “professional yet local” feel. I love the variety of storefronts and the way the light hits the sidewalks in the afternoon.
Aggieville Alleys: Do not let the rowdy reputation fool you. These alleys are full of hidden murals and brick textures that are perfect for a “Badass and Beautiful” branding shot.
The Blue Earth Plaza Area: The modern architecture of the Discovery Center provides sharp, clean lines. It is a great spot for an individual who wants a contemporary, urban look inside and out.
