I started my photography business in early 2013 as a birth photographer, but have since become one of the area’s favorite lifestyle newborn photographers. It was about a year and a half ago that I was running some searches in Google to see how well my website was showing up. Surprisingly, I wasn’t just popping up in the first few links for birth photography. I was also doing really well with newborn photography searches.
I’m a never wake a sleeping baby kind of mama. It doesn’t make sense to put so much time and energy into getting a baby to sleep just to force them into uncomfortable poses and hope they don’t wake up. I’m much more fond of comfortable, baby-led poses. The more babies I worked with, the more I gravitated toward lifestyle photography and discouraged the use of my studio for newborns.
Sometimes it’s pretty awesome to be wrong.
Since realizing that my newborn style is so desirable, I’ve gained confidence and fallen in love with these lifestyle sessions. It feels special to be invited into my clients’ homes even when things are a mess. I feel like I’m part of the family rather than a guest. I love the warmth and more laid back atmosphere. And it’s an honor to be one of the first people to enjoy a mama’s telling of her birth story. I could spend all day documenting those precious, little newborn details. But, my favorite pictures are those images that capture the early bonding between a baby and his or her family.
Yes, I’m trained as a lifestyle newborn photographer. But, it’s not difficult to get a studio look in your home if you’d like that for some of your images.
If I had to choose one photography genre, it would be these lifestyle newborn sessions. I can never seem to get enough of the sweet connections as the dust settles around the arrival of the newest addition.
Are you pregnant? I’m willing to travel up to an hour away for newborn sessions, so let’s chat!
