I am officially expanding Little Leapling to offer family photos in Lawrence KS, and I wanted to start with a solution for the “bland” season. We all know that Kansas winters can feel a bit colorless while we wait for the landscape to turn green. Because of that, I have spent the last few weeks scouting the best indoor and urban locations that offer vibrant textures and light even when the grass is brown.
Lawrence has a creative, independent heartbeat that deserves to be captured in a way that feels raw and real. If you are looking for a session that feels like a family adventure rather than a chore, here are my top picks for unscripted magic in LFK during the winter and early spring months.
Located just off 7th and Mass, Jungle House is a masterclass in texture and light. The owners, Rachel and Jhami, have created a space that feels like a literal breath of fresh air.

If you want to see your kids’ eyes light up (the best “unscripted” look there is), Squishington’s is the place. It’s vibrant, nostalgic, and owned by the same wonderful team as Jungle House.

Lawrence is a book lover’s town, and these two shops are the anchors of that culture.

If you are looking for a backdrop with a little more edge and character, the alleys off the north end of Massachusetts Street are a goldmine for “urban grit.” While these spots sometimes come with a very authentic city fragrance, the trade-off is some of the best street art and brick textures in Lawrence.

If your family’s style leans more modern, the Lawrence Public Library is a dream location. The architecture is a mix of glass, steel, and concrete, offering a minimalist aesthetic that lets your family’s connection be the absolute star of the frame.

Why it works for photos: The outdoor plazas and the “reading nooks” near the large glass windows provide incredible natural light. It is a fantastic spot for “power poses” or quiet, candid moments of a child lost in a book. The concrete angles also provide a neutral color palette that makes any outfit—especially a sharp blazer and slacks—pop with professional clarity.
The Vibe: Sleek, bright, and sophisticated.
The KU campus is a sprawling mix of historic stone and modern glass, offering a variety of backdrops within a few blocks of each other. I recently spent some time exploring the area around the Spencer Museum of Art, and it is a treasure trove for families who want a more “curated” or sophisticated look.

Why it works for photos: Whether you want the sleek angles of a modern gallery or the ivy-covered charm of a historic hall, the campus allows us to switch “vibes” just by walking across the street. It is a fantastic choice for empowerment sessions or high school seniors who want a mix of grit and grace.
Located in the heart of East Lawrence at 9th and Delaware, The Wishing Bench is a piece of living folk art. While the surrounding area has a more industrial, “East Side” energy, the bench itself is a burst of community-decorated color.

If you want the quintessential Lawrence experience, you simply have to spend time on Mass St. This is where the city’s historic charm meets its modern, independent energy. It is a mile-long stretch of beautiful storefronts, outdoor cafes, and wide sidewalks that are perfect for a family stroll.

The Vibe: Vibrant, nostalgic, and full of life. It feels like a small-town main street with a big-city soul. Why it works for photos: Mass St. offers incredible depth of field. I love using the long perspective of the sidewalk to create a beautiful blur of colorful awnings and historic architecture behind your family. It is the best spot for “walking and talking” shots where I can capture your family just being yourselves in the middle of the downtown hum. Whether Kaia is stopping to look in a window or we are capturing a wide shot of the street at sunset, Mass St. provides a backdrop that is unmistakably Lawrence.

I know many of you are waiting for the Flint Hills to turn green before booking your next session. However, you do not have to put your family’s story on hold. These “winter-proof” urban spots are the perfect way to get beautiful, high-energy photos right now. Whether it is the tropical warmth of Jungle House or the modern glass of the Library, we can find plenty of color to bridge the gap until spring officially arrives.

I cannot wait to see which of these locations you choose for your family photos in Lawrence KS this year. Check back here as I link up separate posts for some of these awesome locations with more details and plenty more amazing photos.
As things start to green up, keep an eye out for my favorite Spring and Summer locations!
