Cat Island is an endearing term for Isla Cuale, which is located at the mouth of the Cuale River in Puerto Vallarta‘s Romantic Zone. This is surprisingly quiet and peaceful area in the southern part of Puerto Vallarta’s downtown area, described as an “enchanting island oasis” and a “traffic-free stroll among the trees”.
This small island formed after a hurricane caused the river to branch into two arms in the mid-1920s. The warm climate and lack of predators on the island has lead to a large population of feral cats relaxing in the gardens and around the restaurants and shops. You’ll also find a cultural center, and a craft market, and beautiful street art in this quiet and colorful oasis. It’s the perfect place to relax when the hustle and bustle of downtown Puerto Vallarta has you feeling overwhelmed.
You can reach Cat Island by walking along the Malecon (the waterfront boardwalk) south until you see the bridge over the Rio Cuale. There are multiple stairways leading down to the island, as well as two hanging bridges, La Iguana Bridge and Puente Rio Cuale.
One of the biggest concerns for Cat Island is the overpopulation of cats. As wonderful of an environment as this is, it has become a problematic dumping ground for abandoned the pets. It’s impossible to know just how many cats are in residence here, but the guess is around 100. There are multiple organizations attempting to help out.
Pause 4 Paws is playing a large roll in caring for and finding homes for these sweet kitties. Here is more information about one of the amazing people, Jill Goldstein, who is going above and beyond to help them.
One of the local restaurant owners has also taken on the task of caring for the cats, including feeding them, taking them to the vet if needed, and having them sterilized. You can help keep the island and its feline inhabitants healthy by donating to the wonderful people at Rico Indian Restaurant.
