If you walked by the K-State rec fields in Manhattan, Kansas on a Thursday night this summer, you might have seen a mix of athletic diving catches, dramatic mid-air grabs, and at least a few people aggressively chasing a plastic disc like a golden retriever at the park.
Welcome to the Manhattan Ultimate Summer League!

Another epic summer season wrapped up last week, and as someone who has been running around these fields with my kids for league play and pickup games off and on since 2018, I can tell you there is truly nothing quite like this community.
Whether you are a seasoned player who can throw a 50-yard hammer into the wind or someone who currently thinks a “forehand” is just a term from tennis, our local ultimate scene is one of the most welcoming, fun, and delightfully quirky sports groups in town.

I brought my camera along to capture the action from the 2026 summer games when I wasn’t out on the field dishing out my fair share of foot blocks and cuts.
Not to be confused with frisbee golf, Ultimate is a fast-paced, “non-contact” field sport that combines the non-stop running of soccer, the aerial passing of basketball, and the end-zone scoring of football.
Except, you know… with a frisbee.

But what really sets Ultimate apart from almost every other sport on the planet is Spirit of the Game. Ultimate is traditionally self-officiated, even at high levels of competition. That means no angry referees blowing whistles every five seconds. Players make their own calls, resolve disagreements with a quick chat, and prioritize fair play and mutual respect above all else.
Translation: You get a great workout, play a competitive game, and make lots of new friends!

If you have ever thought about joining but talked yourself out of it because you “aren’t fast enough” or “don’t know how to throw a frisbee,” let me bust those myths right now:
We mean it! Every season, we have players who have been throwing discs for decades playing right alongside folks who threw their very first frisbee three days before the first game. Everyone is eager to teach, encourage, and celebrate your first successful pass.

Gym treadmills are boring. Chasing a flying plastic disc across a green field while laughing with teammates? That is cardio in disguise. You will easily log 3 to 5 miles of running without ever looking at a clock.

One of my favorite things about Manhattan Ultimate is playing alongside my own kids. It is rare to find a sport where parents, teenagers, college students, and local adults can all suit up on the same team and have an absolute blast together.

From ridiculous cheer chants and sideline banter to team high-fives after every single point (whether we scored or accidentally threw the disc into a tree), the camaraderie is unmatched. Bring the whole family to relax on the sideline or cheer on their favorite players!

Let’s be honest, half the fun of summer league is hanging out after the games, grabbing food, rehydrating, and recapping the most dramatic catches of the night. The summer league ultimate enthusiasts gathered at Rockin K’s after each Thursday night game for food, drinks, and laughter. After the final games of the season, team captains picked out players to receive special honors, trophies, and discs.

Manhattan Ultimate just celebrated 29 years of the summer league. At its peak, there were over 200 players battling it out for the disc. League play has extended to Fall and Spring seasons some years, but the Summer league was designed to line up perfectly with the K-State Club teams. Don’t worry if you missed out on Summer League this year. Pick up games will continue on Thursday evenings until it starts getting too dark, then will switch to Sunday evenings until it gets too cold out. League and pick up games are typically at the K-State rec fields off Kimball, at Anneberg Park, or Northeast Community Park.

I just finished editing a massive collection of action shots from this season, and the gallery is officially live! From dramatic layout extension grabs to pure, unfiltered joy on the sidelines, these photos capture the heart and spirit of our summer games.
If you are looking for a fun way to stay active, meet awesome local people, and try something new, come throw with us! We host pickup games and seasonal leagues throughout the year.

Head over to the official Manhattan Ultimate Website to check the current pickup schedule, grab league details, and get on the email list for next season. The Facebook page is also a great place to keep up with the league and pick up schedules. Grab a pair of cleats (or running shoes) and a water bottle, and we will see you on the field!
