Karsyn's Birth Story

February 15, 2017 in Manhattan, KS

The day I gave birth to Karsyn started out as normal as any other day. I had an oil change scheduled for my car at 8:30am and then planned on heading onto work afterwards. Shortly before leaving my house I started feeling some cramping sensations. Mind you, I didn’t know what contractions felt like, as I never experienced them with my first child. I even mentioned to my husband that if they continued until I went to work that I would call the doctor’s office. Not realizing how frequent they were, I got in my car and headed to town. It wasn’t until I was about 3 miles from my house that I started looking at the clock and timing each cramp-like feeling I had been experiencing and they were 5-6 minutes apart…holy moly was this the start of labor?! I had a weekly appointment the day before where I had been dilated to a 4 and about 85% effaced so I knew where I was at with that progress so I decided to go ahead and call my doctor’s office to just check and see if I should maybe get checked. I ended up leaving a message and went about my morning.

While waiting for my car at the dealership, I hadn’t heard back from the doctor’s office so I messaged the nurse through the portal. I then received a call back and while talking through everything I looked at my phone and we had been on the phone for 10 minutes and 46 seconds and I had 2 strong contractions in that time frame. The nurse said with how far dilated I was it is a good idea to go ahead and get checked at the hospital. I called my husband and told him I was going to be heading home to get him and that we were going to go to the hospital so I could get checked. My car finished up about 10 minutes later and I headed back home (the opposite direction of the hospital) to get my husband.

Arriving at the hospital around 10am, the nurses checked me and I wasn’t much over the 4cm I was the day before. With the contractions (now 3-4 minutes apart) I was still experiencing, the on call doctor (my doctor just so happened to be off that day) wanted me to do a little bit of walking and have the nurses check me again after 1 hour. Making my laps and praying I wasn’t over reacting, my contractions were closing in under 2 minutes apart and all I could think was they are just going to send me home and I’m not in labor. After 25 minutes of walking, the nurses checked me and were extremely quiet amongst each other. I asked if there was any progress and there were little words out of them. The next response I received was if I was interested in any meds. (From the beginning I never intended on having an epidural or any drugs in general. Why? I don’t have a good answer for that but I was pretty set on that from the beginning.) After saying no, the nurse said she didn’t think she would be able to get anyone up to the room fast enough. Looking puzzled at my husband, I thought something was wrong so I questioned the nurses again. One nurse said you’re at a 7-8 cm and the other said plus 1! WHAT! This is really happening and we are going to meet our girl today! Everything happened extremely fast and after 20 minutes of pushing, miss Karsyn made her appearance at 12:47pm. I waited to experience this moment again for over 9 years and I can’t help but feel extremely blessed to have our girl here.
