I have a photography studio in my basement. I wish it was bigger and a bit prettier, but it’s got what I need to take beautiful pictures.
I’ve done countless photo sessions down there including newborns, families, cake smashes, and of course themed sessions like the Christmas micros.
My kids are even old enough now that I can hold a short studio session while they entertain themselves elsewhere. Pretty convenient!
I’m glad I have the studio and I’m glad I went for the full-sized backdrop stand, but I’ve found myself encouraging parents to have their newborn sessions in their own home.
In home newborn sessions are best!
Newborns consistently respond better in their home environment and older siblings do much better when not faced with pose after pose after pose during these longer sessions. I also care very much about the new mommies and staying home is so much better during this postpartum stage.
Some people seem to shy away from in home sessions because they don’t feel like their house is neat enough, big enough, or nice enough right after welcoming a baby home, but really all it takes is one or two spots with some nice, natural light and we can create stunning images.
Take a deep breath and just go with it. You’ve just had a baby and nobody expects a tidy house. Daddy and I will move the clothes piles out of the background, sweep up the Cheerios if we happen to need floor space, and sometimes move furniture around a little to get the best possible light.
Please don’t worry about cleaning!
Just open up those blinds, show me around, and let me work my magic.
I loved baby Isaac’s newborn session because it was a great example of the variety of things I can do in your home!
We got beautiful outdoor pictures on their property including the saddle theme they really wanted to try,
great lifestyle pictures, a couple other themed-poses they were hoping we’d have time for,
and we even hung the black backdrop right at the end for a few true studio-looking shots! What a fun mix!
Enjoy this adorable, sleepy little guy!
