One of the most frequent questions I get when someone first inquires about a newborn session is if they can get sibling and family pictures or if I will only take solo newborn pictures.
My first thought is, “3 hours of just the baby? That sounds brutal!” My next thought is, “Why would someone want only pictures of the baby?”
Of course everyone is hoping for some solo newborn shots, but I can’t imagine going through all of the trouble for pictures right after you give birth and then not being in any of them or getting that first awesome family portrait.
Whether I am welcoming a family into my studio, meeting them outdoors, or joining them at their home, my goal is always to get the pictures that my client requests and never once has someone asked me for just baby pictures. If they did make that request, I’d still recommend that they come prepared to be in pictures just in case I can change their minds or their baby is having a rough time sleeping.
For this family’s newborn session, I was attending a birth out of town during our scheduled session. Mama really wanted to include the grandparents who were visiting from out of country, but they were flying home before I could get back for pictures!
We decided to split the session into two parts. I had my very reliable and awesome photographer friend, Rachel Shivers of Vibrant Life Photography step in to take the requested outdoor family pictures. Then we scheduled a second in home session with a little bit more focus on posed pictures than my typical newborn lifestyle sessions per my client’s preferences. I received the outdoor pictures for editing so that my client would receive a consistent style for her combined newborn session. Voila!
When it was finally time for her in home session, this little sweetheart gave a us few minutes of shut eye, but woke up quickly each time she was put down. At three weeks old, that isn’t uncommon, but we were still able to capture the cuteness. This Mama also chose to personally select which images to include in her gallery, an upgrade option I offer all sessions!
And thank you to this mama for allowing me to share her beautiful nursing pictures. I offer all of my newborn clients the opportunity to have a couple complimentary breastfeeding pictures. I felt very uncomfortable nursing my babies when they were tiny and so I never had anything but cell phone selfies. Now that my nursing days are over, I really wish I had some professional pictures that captured that special time in my life. I’m glad I can gift that to other mamas!
Enjoy the rest of this beautiful in home newborn session!
How sweet is this little mama? She didn’t want to hold her sister, but she was definitely the cutest big sister!
Welcome Home, Sweet Sofia!
