So, when is the best time to get your family portraits during the Summer?
That Kansas sun can be BRUTAL and the last thing you want
are pictures of red-faced, sweaty, and crabby kids
(and yes, you can definitely count your husband among the kids when it comes to getting pictures when it is hot out!).
When someone contacts me for a session between June – September,
I like to find a date that works well, but schedule a little earlier than you’d planned so that we can keep things fairly flexible.
We’ll keep an eye on the forecast and even if the temperatures don’t look ridiculous,
if it’s likely to be super humid, let’s bump things down the road a little.
In addition to hot temperatures, we also have to work around harsh sunlight.
The sun climbs high pretty quickly and getting great pictures goes beyond just keep the sun out of your eyes.
Since I work with families and it’s really tough to get the crew moving early in the morning,
Especially if you have younger children (0-5), I usually aim for around 9am and then suggest a couple locations that have really good shade.
As much as I love those evening sessions and that luscious golden light coming through trees,
the sun doesn’t set until close to 9pm and I’d rather have happy kids than perfect light (which you can’t always count on anyhow).
This family met me over at Tuttle Creek Outlet Park and we stuck to cool shade.
I just love how bright and colorful their pictures came out!
In addition to being flexible on dates and times, make sure you prepare for your
Summer photo session with cold water and bug repellent!
Enjoy the rest of your Summer!
